Vatican newspaper gives positive review to Harry Potter movie

July 14, 2009

Continuing an editorial trend that has bewildered many readers and roused many critics, the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano has given a four-star endorsement to the latest movie in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” The paper acknowledged that the wildly popular wor of author J.K. Rowling “lacks a reference to transcendence,” but saluted the film for its positive portrayal of “friendship, altruism, loyalty, and self-giving.” L’Osservatore dismissed concerns by critics who have warned that the Potter books glorify sorcery and black magic, saying that the use of magic in the movie is similar to that in “classic fairy tales.”
