Cardinal Zen: Chinese Church still under pressure, need to be bold

Cardinal Joseph Zen, the retired Bishop of Hong Kong and persistent critic of Beijing's efforts to harness the Catholic Church, has offered his appraisal of the situation facing Chinese Catholics, two years after Pope Benedict XVI wrote a special message to the Church in that country. The government is still struggling to exert control over the Church, the cardinal writes. He exhorts Chinese Catholic leaders-- especially those of the "official" Church recognized by the government-- to be more courageous in resisting compromise, and especially in rejecting the claims to authority made by the government-backed Patriotic Catholic Association.
