GE to phase out lab rats, use embryonic stem cells for testing instead

General Electric has announced plans to phase out the use of laboratory rats in the testing of drug safety, and use embryonic stem cells in their place. In explaining the move, a company spokesman said that the use of human tissues would be more efficient in measuring the effects of drugs. While acknowledging the "considerable debate" about the use of human embryos, a GE statement concluded: "We conduct our research in an ethically and scientifically responsible manner."
