CWN Editor's Note: In his homily at morning Mass on November 21, Pope Francis said efforts to impose ideology lead to persecution. Reflecting on the day’s reading from the Book of Maccabees, he said that the Maccabees suffered from a “cultural persecution,” which he characterized as a bid “to make everything new and to make a clean break with everything: the cultures, the laws and the religions of a people.”
