Scottish cardinal denounces nuclear-sub program

Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh has lashed out against British government plans to upgrade the military's nuclear-weapons capacity, saying categorically that the use of nuclear weapons can never be justified. The cardinal argued that even the threat to use nuclear warheads is morally wrong, and thus the possession of a nuclear deterrent force is unjustifiable. His remarks came after the government announced a commitment to replace the aging warheads on Trident submarines.
