Canonist argues for further disciplinary action against Milingo
June 26, 2009
The word "insordescence" has disappeared from ordinary use and even from the Code of Canon Law. But canonist Edward Peters argues that the term-- which applies to someone who fails to seek reconciliation after having been excommunicated-- applies to Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo. As the African archbishop continues to defy the Holy See and ordain new bishops for his schismatic movement, Peters sees the need for further canonical sanctions, possibly including dismissal from the clerical state. He notes that only the Pope can put a bishop on trial, so "if Rome does not act in this case, nothing will get done."
