Why no prosecution for anti-Christian violence? Indian archbishop asks

June 26, 2009

A Catholic prelate in India's troubled Orissa state has spoken out to protest the lack of legal action against the Hindu extremists responsible for a series of violent assaults against Christians. Archbishop Rafael Cheenath of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar told a Vatican Radio audience that the failure of police to bring charges against the instigators of the violence was contributing to a climate of fear in the region. He explained that "people are afraid to return, because they fear being attacked again."
