Hope remains for Red Cross hostage held in Philippines

Church officials in the Philippines report that there has been contact with the kidnappers who are holding Eugene Vagni, a Red Cross worker who was seized by Abu Sayyaf guerillas in January. Although they admit having "more hope than certainties," they believe that a ransom payment could secure his release. Vagni was singled out by Pope Benedict XVI during an appeal for the release of all hostages at the Pontiff's regular weekly audience on June 24.
