Papal appeal: aid refugees, despite difficulties

At this midday audience on Sunday, June 21, Pope Benedict XVI drew attention to the World Day for Refugees proclaimed by the UN, and asked the faithful to pray "for the difficult and sometimes tragic situation of refugees." The Pope recognized that with millions of people leaving their native lands because of war, oppression, and need, the countries to which they travel encounter "no small number of difficulties." Still, he said, "it is nonetheless incumbent upon us" to provide shelter for those in need. The Pope made his appeal from San Giovanni Rotondo, where he was visiting the Capuchin monastery made famous by Padre Pio.
