Pope Benedict XVI used Sts. Cyril and Methodius as examples of the proper approach in inculturation, as he continued his Wednesday talks on the early Church Fathers. Speaking to about 30,000 people is St. Peter's Square on June 17, the Holy Father remarked that the 9th-century "apostles to the Slavs" built bridges between the cultures of Eastern and Western Europe, and advanced the faith while strengthening the culture of the peoples with whom they worked. The Pope said that the two brothers-- today honored as co-patrons of Europe-- provided "a classic example of what today we call 'inculturation': each people must integrate the revealed message into their own culture and express the truths of salvation with their own language."
