Demographers find skewed gender ratio among Asian-American children
June 16, 2009
Demographers have noticed a disparity between the number of male and female babies born to Asia-American couples. Among Chinese-, Korean-, and Indian-American couples who already had a girl child, there were 1.17 boys born for every girl: a figure well above the usual 1.05-1 ratio. The discovery raises the possibility that sex-selection abortion, which is widespread in Asian countries because of strong cultural preferences for male children, may be having an impact in the US as well.
