Hunger is unacceptable in an affluent world, Pope repeats

June 15, 2009

The fact that millions of the world's poor still live with constant hunger reflects an "absolutely unacceptable situation," Pope Benedict XVI said at his Angelus audience on June 14. Calling attention to a UN conference on how the worldwide economic crisis is affecting development efforts, the Pope remarked that despite years of efforts to eliminate malnutrition in recent decades, the situation "fails to improve." The Pope expressed his hope that "the current crisis may be transformed into an opportunity" that will allow world leaders to establish more equitable arrangements for sharing wealth and ensuring basic nutrition for all.
