Pope urges religious instructors to adapt, be creative

July 12, 2017

Pope Francis encouraged catechists to find new ways to transmit the faith, in a message to the International Catechetical Symposium, taking place in Buenos Aires.

The Pope said that religious instructors should always look for “new signs and forms for the transmission of the faith.” He urged them to imitate “the style of Jesus, who adapted to the people around Him in order to bring them the love of God.”

No, No, No! Not more 'methodology' - we've had years and years of new forms and adaptations and creative ways. What is essential is that the Faith be transmitted, that doctrine be taught. That is why homeschoolers reach the Baltimore catechism (yes, you can correlate it to the CCC) - The Cure d'Ars gathered the children about him in that hopeless town of Arts, and taught them the One, True, Holy and Catholic Faith - no interactive gizmo's, no crossword puzzles, no manipulation of words, etc, etc

Christ often spoke in parables and forms that few of his listeners could even understand. Among them were His chosen Apostles who needed the descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost to begin the illumination necessary to fully grasp and appreciate the immensity of God's incarnation in 3-dimensional human form. Just consider the alien frame of mind needed by Jewish and Roman audiences in order to regard Christ's human form not as a graven image or idol, but as God among us in His physical reality.

Christ did not "adapt to the people around him", nor did He change His style. He told people hard truths that were sometimes not easy to hear. Think of the Samaritan woman at the well and compare that to the Bread of Life discourse in the last halk of John 6.
