Nigerian bishops urge end to conflict in delta region

The Nigerian bishops have issued a call for a "total and unconditional ceasefire in the Niger Delta," a region where continued struggle for control of the oil traffic has produced enormous suffering among civilians. The bishops' statement-- signed by Archbishop Felix A. Job of Ibadan, the president of the Nigerian bishops' conference-- charged that an army offensive in the region has destroyed many homes, driving need families into exile.
