New bishop of Rockville Centre named

December 09, 2016

Pope Francis has name Bishop John Barres of Allentown as the bishop of Rockville Centre, NY, one of the United States’ ten most populous dioceses, and one larger than some of the United States’ traditional cardinatial sees.

A graduate of Princeton University, where he played college basketball, and the NYU School of Business, Bishop Barres was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Wilmington, DE, in 1989 and bishop of Allentown, PA, in 2009.

Bishop Barres replaces Bishop William Murphy, 76, who was named bishop of Rockville Centre in 2001 and has retired for reasons of age.
