South Korean bishops call for resignation of President Park after financial/access scandal

November 16, 2016

South Korean Catholic leaders are joining in calls for the resignation of President Park Geun-hye, who has became embroiled in a financial scandal.

President Park, South Korea’s first female chief executive, is under fire because of revelations that a close aide, Choi Soon-sil, used her access to the president to solicit corporate contributions to non-profit organizations that she controlled, and used the funds for personal expenses. In a development eerily reminiscent of a recent American political scandal, Choi is also accused of providing donors with access to secret government documents.

Auxiliary Bishop Simon Ok Hyn-jin of Kwangju and Bishop Vincent Ri Pyung-ho of Jeonju have made public calls for the president’s resignation, and several other bishops have joined in public demonstrations calling for the president to step down.
