ACLU complaint targets nation’s largest Catholic hospital system over sterilization

October 27, 2016

Describing sterilization as “essential health care,” the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a complaint with the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights against Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic hospital system, as well as a subsidiary, Genesys Health System.

Arguing that “Ascension and Genesys’s policy banning tubal ligations discriminates against … women on the basis of sex,” the ACLU called upon the federal government “to take steps to ensure that Ascension and Genesys adhere to the non-discrimination protections guaranteed by Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.”

I agree with ElizabethD's comments, though I would clarify (and I'm sure she would agree) that the intimate act of sexual intercourse is never "consequence free" despite the wishes of the sexual libertines. Sexual expression has profound personal consequences for those involved even when a new life is not procreated.

You may recall that Hillary Clinton said in a speech this campaign season that religious bodies will have to change their doctrines if she becomes president.

With the rise of the transgender ideology, loumiamo's quip may actually be a viable response.

I advise the hospital to simply publicize a new policy that refuses tubal ligations to every man who may want one, thereby completely eliminating the charge of "discriminating against...women on the basis of sex."

Mutilating women or men to destroy their reproductive function is not health care. Hopefully this hospital system also refuses to do vasectomies. This paganism today wants all women to be available for consequence free sexual activity at all times. The Catholic Church is protecting women's authentic well being and dignity as well as the health of marriage and family relationships which are basic to human thriving and stable society.
