Cardinal Parolin calls on Europe to return to Christian roots

October 13, 2016

In an address delivered at the Catholic University of Portugal on October 12, the Vatican’s Secretary of State reflected on the work of Christian political leaders after World War II to build a European community and the current waning sense of European identity, precipitated in part by the migrant and refugee crisis.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin linked this “de-Europeanization” to the decline of Christian identity. “We must return to the roots,” he said – “rediscover the Christian roots upon which the history of Europe has developed,” in order to exercise “our public responsibility.”
