Polish bishops will continue push for tighter abortion restrictions

The Polish bishops’ conference has indicated that Church leaders will continue to press for protection of unborn children, after the country’s legislature defeated a measure that would have outlawed abortion in all circumstances.
“The draft bill may have needed some corrections, but it was prepared solidly enough,” said Archbishop Henryk Hoser of Warsaw, the president of the bishops’ conference. He insisted that the dignity of human life “shouldn’t be the object of political bargains.”
The legislation that was defeated in the Polish parliament would have allowed for prosecution of women who procured abortion. The bishops had opposed that provision of the bill.
Polish law currently bans abortion except in cases of rape, incest, severe fetal deformation, or danger to the mother’s life.
