Colombian bishops welcome Nobel Peace Prize for Santos
October 11, 2016
The president of Colombia’s episcopal conference has issued a statement welcoming the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the nation’s president, Juan Manuel Santos.
Santos brokered a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the hope of ending a civil conflict that began in 1964. Voters narrowly rejected the terms of the deal in a plebiscite.
“I congratulate President Santos with all my heart,” said Archbishop Luis Augusto Castro of Tunja, who expressed hope that negotiators may find a “rapid solution” and that the peace process may proceed.
