Polish bishops reject campaign by gay-right activists

The Catholic bishops of Poland have spoken out against a drive by homosexual activists to gain greater acceptance.

The gay-rights campaign, organized around the theme, "Let's exchange a sign of peace," has including billboard advertisements and the hosting of "pilgrim havens" for homosexuals during World Youth Day.

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow said that the campaign has been "falsifying the Church's unchangeable teaching," by portraying same-sex unions as "something morally good." Cardinal Kazmierz Nycz of Warsaw agreed that the group had gone beyond advocacy of tolerance for homosexuals and was pushing for a change in Catholic doctrine.

Now the Polish bishops' conference has weighed in with a statement rejecting criticism of the Church as "homophobic." The Church, the bishops' statement said, has "untiringly proclaimed the dignity of all without exception."

"But if extending hands to others means accepting the person," the statement continued, "it never means approving their sin."
