Archbishop Gerety, world's oldest bishop, dead at 104

Archbishop Peter Gerety, the retired Archbishop of Newark, died on September 20 at a nursing home in New Jersey.

Archbishop Gerety, who led the Newark archdiocese from 1974 until his retirement in 1986, was 104 years old. He was the world's oldest bishop at the time of his death, and had been the oldest American bishop for nearly a decade.
