Threats force cancellation of Australian conference by marriage supporters

September 21, 2016

A conference organized by Australian Christian groups to discuss opposition to same-sex marriage was cancelled because "threats of violence" received by the staff of the hotel where the event was to take place.

The Mercure Sydney Airport Hotel revealed that it had undertaken a thorough review of security procedures because of the threats, which had "rattled" staff members and raised questions about the safety of other guests. "Following this review, the event will no longer take place," the hotel said.

One of the organizers of the conference said that the event had been cancelled "due to our concern for the safety of the hotel staff and our commitment to a reasonable and respectful debate."
