'Hundreds of thousands' exploited in sexual trafficking, Nigerian archbishop reports

The president of the Nigerian Catholic bishops' conference reports that most of the young Nigerian girls arriving in Italy are victims of sex trafficking.
Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos, speaking to an international conference on sex trafficking, estimated that 80% of the girls entering Italy are caught up in sex traffic. He called upon his country's government to recognize "a national disgrace" and take urgent action to curb the traffic.
Nigeria is not an isolated case, the archbishop said. "In Africa alone, hundreds of thousands of persons are trafficked annually," he said. The majority are women, subjected to sexual exploitation; a minority are men who are used for forced labor.
