Venezuela’s bishops defend right to protest against government

As the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro launched a crackdown ahead of September 1 protests organized by opposition leaders, the nation’s bishops affirmed the right of citizens to demonstrate peacefully against the government.
Expressing their solidarity with those who are suffering, the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference called upon the government to “guarantee to all citizens the right to free expression of their ideas” as well as “freedom of movement within the country.”
