"Pope Francis wrote me a letter, but I will not divulge the content," Rousseff disclosed. "I can only say that it was not an official letter."
An official letter could have provoked complaints of Vatican interference in the domestic politics of Brazil, where Rousseff faces impeachment. The bid to oust the president has heightened political divisions, aggravating the tensions brought on by a long and deep economic crisis. Nevertheless, analysts in Brazil have seen the Pope's message as an indication of personal support for Rousseff.
