Ukrainian Catholic leader: the Church must save the family

August 12, 2016

Speaking recently to a participants in a movement for married couples, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church said that “the institution of the family as inseparable and fruitful union between a man and a woman is at the center of a large attack.”

“Ukrainian Greek Catholics can say that the family saved the Church during the persecution of the Church,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who leads one of the largest of the Eastern Catholic churches in full communion with the Holy See. “So today the sacred duty of the Church is to save the family.”

It “is not enough just to preach about certain moral principles regarding family and marriage,” he added. “We should be close to those families who need our help.”
