Top aide to Cardinal Pell leaving Secretariat for Economy

July 21, 2016

Danny Casey, a chief aide to Cardinal George Pell at the Secretariat for the Economy, will step down from his post and return to his native Australia at the end of September, The Tablet has disclosed.

Casey, who had been brought to Rome by Cardinal Pell in 2014, will leave after completing a two-year stint at the Secretariat for the Economy. His departure follows closely after that of Msgr. Mark Withoos, who had been private secretary to Cardinal Pell and had helped to set up the new Vatican office. The departures come at a time when the authority of the Secretariat for the Economy has been trimmed back, raising questions about the future of the drive for Vatican financial reform.

Casey, who had been business manager for the Archdiocese of Sydney before coming to Rome, had been responsible for setting up policies and procedures for the Secretariat for the Economy. He had been involved in the thorough review of Vatican accounts that uncovered over $2 billion in off-budget accounts.
