Pope to Dominicans: 'testify to mercy'

July 19, 2016

In a message to leaders of the Dominican order, who are holding a general chapter in Bologna this week, Pope Francis urged: "Testify to mercy, professing it and embodying it in life."

The Pope's message paid tribute to St. Dominic as "a tireless apostle of grace and forgiveness, compassionare toward the poor and an ardent defender of truth."

The Dominican general chapter is the second of three, separated by three years apiece, leading up to the  election of a new Master General. This year's meeting, the General Chapter of Priors General, is being held on the 800th anniversary of the formal recognition of the order by Pope Honorius III.
