July 01, 2016

In 2014-15, Catholic dioceses and organizations raised $150 million to assist five million persons affected by the humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq, according to the Holy See Press Office.

More than $30 million has been allotted for food aid, $25 million for non-food provisions, $25 million for education, $16 million for health care, and $10 million for housing.

The war in Syria, a nation of 17 million, has claimed 400,000 lives. More than ten million Syrians have fled their homes, including six million to other places in Syria, 1.9 million to Turkey, 1.1 million to Lebanon, and 600,000 to Jordan. Three million Iraqis have fled their homes.

The Pontifical Council Cor Unum, in collaboration with Aid to the Church in Need, Catholic Relief Services, and Missio, is currently conducting a seminar to assist Syrian dioceses in providing humanitarian assistance.
