Jesuit elected chairman of US religious freedom commission
June 29, 2016
Father Thomas Reese, SJ, has been elected chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom by his fellow commissioners.
Father Reese, senior analyst for the National Catholic Reporter and former editor of America magazine, succeeds Robert George, a Princeton University professor and Catholic layman.
“World events underscore the importance of this fundamental right,” said Father Reese. “A key factor in many of the United States’ foreign policy challenges, religious freedom is under serious and sustained attack across much of the globe.”
