Priest in India survives murder attempt

June 21, 2016

A Catholic priest in the northeastern state of Assam, India, escaped an assassination attempt on June 20, but was hospitalized with wounds he suffered in warding off the attack, the Fides news service reports.

Father Sushil John Soren was attacked by a machete-wielding man as he returned from a prayer service to his resident in Tezpur. He blocked a blow to his neck, however, and his assailant fled as residents at a nearby boys' school rushed to his assistance.

The motivation for the attack is not yet known. The Assam region has been troubled by many ethnic and religious conflicts.
