British physicians' group maintains stand against assisted suicide

The British Medical Association (BMA) has voted to continue its opposition to physician-assisted suicide.

By a vote of 198- 115, the BMA-- the union of medical doctors in the United Kingdom-- rejected a motion that would have changed the group's official stance on assisted suicide from opposition to neutrality. The vote followed a lengthy consultation with members, in which doctors had voiced their misgivings about helping suicides.

The BMA decision came despite growing public pressure in favor of assisted suicide in Britain.
