Bishop sees springtime for the Church in Kosovo

The Catholic Church in Kosovo is experiencing a springtime, Bishop Dodë Gjergji of Prizren, the nation’s sole prelate, said in remarks published by the Vatican newspaper.
Kosovo, a former Yugoslav region that declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, is 4% Catholic and over 90% Muslim.
Bishop Gjergji said that parishes are being built in areas where the Church has not been present in centuries. “We are also helping persons who sense that they are Catholic but were Islamized during the Ottoman Empire and now want to return to their origins.”
“It is the springtime of the Catholic Church in Kosovo,” he added. “For the first time in 700 years we can live freely, proclaim [the Gospel], welcome people, and make our contribution not only to Catholics, but to all of Kosovar society.”
