Bishop reports massive Christian flight from northern Nigeria

May 30, 2016

More than 1.3 million Christians have fled their homes in northern Nigeria to escape Islamic violence, Bishop Joseph Bagobiri of Kafanchan told the Fides news service.

In the past decade about 11,500 Christians have been killed and 13,000 churches damaged or abandoned, the bishop reported, in the northern states of Borno, Kano, and Yobe. He attributed the violence primarily to Muslim Fulani tribesman, although the Boko Haram terrorist group has also been active in the region.

Christians are a dwindling minority in northern Nigeria, where Islam predominates. The country's Christian population lives mostly in the south.
