Charitable work must be supported by prayer, Pope tells Don Orione congregation

May 27, 2016

"Your service to the Church will be more effective the more you apply yourselves to care for your personal closeness to Christ and to your spiritual formation," Pope Francis said in a May 27 audience with members of the Congregation of Don Orione, who were gathered in Rome for their general chapter.

The Pontiff encouraged his audience to imitate the example of St. Luigi Orione, combining charitable work with spiritual growth. He advised them to "always keep watch to ensure faith does not become ideology, charity is not reduced to philantrhopy, and the Church does not end up as an NGO."
