Kenyan bishops decry decision to close world’s largest refugee camp

Citing an “existential security threat,” the Kenyan government has announced its intent to close the world’s largest refugee camp, which hosts over 300,000 refugees, primarily from Somalia.
Kenya’s bishops called for a reconsideration of the decision.
“Individuals seeking asylum in Kenya have a right to be protected and enjoy basic services until lasting solutions are found in their home countries, or within the country of asylum as well through third country resettlement,” the bishops said in a statement.
“We reiterate that any form of involuntary repatriation may expose the returnees to dangers of persecution,” they added. “We are deeply concerned that forcible return of hundreds of thousands of refugees will cause catastrophic humanitarian consequences.”
