Mine clearance begins at site of Christ's Baptism
May 18, 2016
Israeli authorities report that land mines will be cleared away from the area around the site where Jesus was baptized.
The region of Qasr al-Yahud, on the west bank of the Jordan River, will be cleared of explosive devices by the Israeli military, with support from the British Halo Trust. The region-- except for a narrow lane cleared to the river and accessible to Christian pilgrims-- has been regarded as unsafe for years because of the unexploded ordinance. The mine-clearing process should be complete by the end of this year.
