Cardinal announces Paralympic partnership between Italian team, Rio parish
May 13, 2016
Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, announced at a Vatican press conference that a parish will serve as the Italian base of operations during the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“This time we did not want to choose a private accommodation, but we wanted our delegation-- following the values the Pope wants to communicate during the Jubilee of Mercy-- to pay more attention to the essentials,” said Luca Pancalli, president of the Italian Paralympic Committee, who spoke of her desire to leave behind “a tangible sign of our presence,” such as an athletic field for the blind.
