Suspect arrested in death of Florida priest

April 20, 2016

Police in South Carolina have arrested a man in connection with the death of a Catholic priest who had been missing for several days.

The body of Father Rene Wayne Robert, a priest of the Dicoese of St. Augustine, Florida, was discovered in a wooded area of Waynesboro, Georgia. Police believe that he had been dead since April 10, the date of his disappearance.

Steve James Murray, a Florida resident, was arrested in South Carolina, where he had been driving a car owned by the slain priest. The suspect reportedly had several firearms in his possession at the time of his arrest, as well as a cache of stolen merchandise.

Father Robert, who was involved in prison ministry, had reportedly been trying to provide help for Murray. Friends say that the priest was well aware that he was working with potentially dangerous people.
