Brazilian bishops call for ‘profound political reform’

With Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff facing the increasingly likely prospect of impeachment on charges of violating budget-related laws, the nation’s bishops called upon Brazilians to “preserve the high values of democratic coexistence, respect for neighbor, tolerance, and healthy pluralism.”
Stating that “the current crisis manifests the necessity of an authentic and profound political reform,” the bishops vowed to monitor the impeachment proceedings to ensure that the rule of law is followed.
