Vatican envoy asks international response to terrorist threats

April 15, 2016

"The internationalization of terror can only be countered by a collective international response," the Vatican's representative said in an April 14 address to the UN.

Archbishop Bernardito Auza said that "fundamentalist terror is a transnational phenomenon." He denounced the "utter barbarity" and "unspeakable crimes" committed by terrorists, and called special attention to the drive by terrorists to "destroy centuries of peaceful coexistence of Muslims and Christians" in the Middle East.

Archbishop Auza did not identify the international terrorist movement with a particular religious faith, but decried the "mendacity and blasphemy of terrorist groups" that claim religious authorization for violence.
