Brazilian cardinal: 21st century ‘decisive’ in saving the planet

April 12, 2016

Addressing Brazil’s bishops, Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, the retired prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, described the Amazon River basin as the “lungs of the planet” and said that this century will prove “decisive in saving the planet.”

Lamenting the poverty and sexual abuse of children in the region, Cardinal Hummes also said that the Church in the region should develop more of an “Amazonic face,” in which indigenous persons assume a more active role.

The 81-year-old prelate made his remarks at a meeting of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil.
