Anglican archbishop of Wales apologizes to same-sex couples

April 06, 2016

The Anglican Archbishop of Wales has apologized "unreservedly" to same-sex couples for "the persecution and mistreatment they have endured at the hands of the Church."

Dr. Barry Morgan has authorized Anglican churches in Wales to offer blessings for same-sex couples, but has stopped short of approving marriage ceremonies. He explained that in light of fierce disagreements within the Anglican communion on the issue, it would be "foolish" to press for a change authorizing same-sex marriages. He held out hope, however, that eventually that change would be allowed.
