Born in Switzerland, Georges Cottier entered the Dominican order in 1946 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1951. He was named theologian of the papal household by St. John Paul II in 1990, and received his cardinal's red hat from the same Pontiff in 2003.
In a telegram of condolence to the cardinal's sister, Pope Francis praised him for his "strong faith, his paternal kindness, and his intense cultural and ecclesial activity, especially in the service of Pope St. John Paul II and Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI."
A funeral for Cardinal Cottier will be celebrated on April 2 in St. Peter's basilica, with Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the dean of the College of Cardinals, presiding. Pope Francis will then lead the rite of commendation.
