No news on priest kidnapped in Yemen

April 01, 2016

Bishop Paul Hinder, the apostolic vicar for Southern Arabia, says that he has still no received any reliable news about Father Tom Uzhunnalil, the Salesian priest who was seized by gunmen during a murderous March 4 raid on a nursing home in Aden, Yemen.

"Days go by, and we do not know where he is," the bishop told the Fides news service. "We cannot confirm or deny anything."

Earlier this week, many news outlets circulated a report that Father Uzhunnalil had been crucified on Good Friday by the Islamic State, which took responsibility for the raid in Aden. Bishop Hindoo emphasized that those reports were based on unconfirmed rumors; he said that there were "strong indications" that the priest is still alive. More recently there have been reports-- again unconfirmed-- that government officials in India had received a ransom demand from the priest's captors.
