Anti-abuse expert sees firm commitment by Pope Francis

April 01, 2016

As she begins work with a papal commission on sexual abuse, an American expert told the Crux news site that she has full confidence in the commitment of Pope Francis to protect children.

Teresa Kettelkamp, a former Illinois State Police official who headed the US bishops' child-protection efforts from 2005 to 2011, told Crux that she can sense the Pope's commitment because of the strong stands taken by Cardinal Sean O'Malley, who chairs the papal commission, and other officials. "If their leader was wavering, we'd see some trickle-down effect of that, but we don't," she said.

Kettelkamp was hired to help develop guidelines for child-protection policies and "best practices" that could be adopted by episcopal conferences around the world.
