Spanish Catholic organizations blast EU proposal on migrants
March 23, 2016
Caritas Spain, the Spanish Conference of Religious, and the social apostolate of the Spanish Jesuits recently issued a joint statement blasting a proposed agreement between the EU and Turkey on migrants.
Under the plan, migrants who travel to Greece from Turkey would be forcibly returned. For each migrant returned to Turkey, the EU would accept a Syrian refugee currently living in Turkey.
Stating that the proposal violates international treaties, the Spanish Catholic organizations called upon “the Christian community and the whole of society to express their unequivocal rejection of this agreement, which condemns all those human beings-- the majority women and children-- to see their desires for freedom curtailed.”
