4.5 million refugees from Syria’s civil war
March 18, 2016
Caritas Italiana, the relief and development agency of the Church in Italy, has published a 24-page report marking the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Syrian Civil War.
According to Caritas, the war, which has claimed more than 260,000 lives, has led 12.5 million people to leave their homes: eight million have been internally displaced within Syria, and 4.5 million are refugees. The majority of refugees are in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq.
Appealing for continued refugee assistance, Caritas called for advocacy on behalf of peace “at the level of governments and international institutions.”
