The Portuguese leader-- who was making his first formal state visit since assuming the presidency-- spoke with the Pontiff about Chuch-state relations and the Catholic perspective on questions involving the dignity of life and the institution of the family. The conversation also touched upon issues involving Europe and the Mediterranean basin, particularly the question of immigration.
